Remontant: A Poem

–adjective
1. (of certain roses) blooming more than once in a season.
–noun
2. a remontant rose

May blooms so new she still blushes at the attention,
Yet first frenzied flush of flowering already fades,
Sere calyxes bereft of glory.

The catalog assures, "R - repeat bloomer,"
Remontant:
Time to deadhead, then,
Sharp shears in sure hands
Nipping just above a growth bud,
Spurring spent shrub to sprout new stems,
To bloom again,
Bloom much,
Bloom longer.

The wound but paves the way for glory.
       ~crm, 5/6/11

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper. Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples" (John 15:1-2,8, HCSB).

  1. Beautiful on so many levels. Reminds me I need to go outside and do some trimming. . . and accept the trimming in my own life with gratitude.

  2. Oh, but don't I want to feel worthy of pruning! And maybe I am. There is hope! Hope for blooming again. Thanks!

  3. @Amy Thank you, Amy. I'm not very good at embracing the pruning shears, either, especially with gratitude. God is so gracious to let me even cry out my self-pity to Him when it hurts.

God bless you and yours, friend.

  5. It's so hard for me to cut back my plants, even when I know it's necessary to get more blooms. I'm grateful (although admittedly scared) that God isn't so reluctant to prune us so that we can continue to bloom again too. Thanks for sharing this. Beautiful.

  9. the wound paves the way for glory...

i've been contemplating the spiritual meaning of 'dead-heading' too, friend. kind of like the parable where he prunes the vines... beautiful analogy. xo

  11. @emily wierenga It makes me glad that these words prodded you to meditate further on our relationship with the Gardener/Vinedresser. May He glorify Himself in you and your creative work.

  12. Gardening is just like that...prune, feed and watch it grow.

It is the same with us...prune, He cuts and cuts.
Feed, complete fills us with His Word.
Watch it grow, He realizes that we accepted Him fully.

    Embrace His blessings,

    Mrs. M.
